Ep 33 - Georgina speaks to David Liddle County Training Manager at South London Scouts šŸ„¾ā›µšŸ•ļø
Nov 08, 2021 Season 1 Episode 33
Georgina Jackson

David works in financial services, but he says, ā€˜outside of my 9 to 5 I spend as much time outdoors on the water doing whatever that I possibly canā€™. He is also the County Training Manager at South London Scouts and I wanted to talk to him about how he felt the last 18 months had impacted the young people he works with. ā€˜On a positive note, I think the last 18 months have been great in that thereā€™s been worldwide connections which would have never happened, weā€™ve met people, made new friends got people interested in different things that would never have happened. But on the flip side to that thereā€™s a massive gap in the socialization of young people. Thereā€™s a lot of anxiety thatā€™s come in that definitely wasnā€™t there before.ā€™

David recognises, ā€˜Covid is a big restriction at the moment and obviously whilst we need to be mindfulā€¦ I think we should be pushing to get young people outdoors doing different activitiesā€™. That said he says, ā€˜I generally find that every activity that we [South London Scouts] run will be pretty much sold out instantaneously because theyā€™re so keen at the moment to get back doing things which is so greatā€™. In fact, there is something for everyone at the Scouts for both girls and boys from 4 years old upwards to adult volunteers. David explains, ā€˜Weā€™ve got Squirrels starting off super young, weā€™ve now got Cubs coming in, we then got Cub Scouts and really thereā€™s a place in scouting from every age really up to adultsā€™. What is he looking forward to in the future, ā€˜Just getting back into the proper outdoors. We have a general saying in scouting that thereā€™s no such thing as bad weather just inappropriate clothingā€™. The interview was recorded on Monday 18th October at 12pm BST.
